Why these words come first

A learner hears eat, sleep and go dozens of times before a single day is over — that is why these ten action words fill tier 1 of the TotWord catalog alongside family and the first nouns. Tiers order words by how often they turn up in everyday life, not by subject: a verb a learner hears constantly outranks a noun seen only sometimes, which is why eat and run sit beside mother and father rather than after every animal or colour word.

Each card below shows the action in progress — a person eating, running, sitting — next to the English word, its IPA transcription, a plain-English respelling anyone can read aloud without training, and the meaning in Bengali or Hindi. Tap the round button to hear it in the language you picked above.

Pick one topic per sitting — five words is a full session. Say the respelling, not the IPA, when reading aloud, and act the word out where you can — sit down for sit, walk across the room for walk. Play the English clip first and the home-language clip second.

Questions people ask

Why are everyday actions like eat and sleep already in tier 1?
Tiers rank words by how often they come up in daily life, and action words top that list — a learner hears and does eat, sleep, go and come many times before most nouns even appear. That is why actions-01 opens in tier 1, right alongside family words.
Do I have to finish actions-01 before opening actions-02?
No. Tiers only order the topic list by how common the words are; they never lock anything. Any learner can open any topic on any day.
Why does eat always translate the same way, even though the Bengali and Hindi verb changes with the speaker?
English eat, drink and sleep stay in one dictionary form no matter who is doing them. Bengali and Hindi verbs change shape with the speaker — খাওয়া becomes খায় or খাচ্ছে, and खाना becomes खाता or खा रहा है. TotWord always shows the base form — খাওয়া, खाना — as the meaning, because that is the form a dictionary, and a first-time learner, starts from.
