Why these words come first

The things in a room get pointed at and named long before their uses are understood. That is why door, window, chair, table and bed sit in tier 1 of the TotWord catalog — tiers order the words by everyday frequency for the target age, not by theme, and the objects around a learner every day earn an early place on that list.

Each card below carries the picture, the English word, its IPA transcription, a plain-English respelling you can read aloud without training, and the meaning in Bengali or Hindi. Tap the round button to hear it in the language you picked above.

Pick one topic per sitting — five words is a full session. Say the respelling, not the IPA, when reading aloud. Play the English clip first and the home-language clip second.

Questions people ask

Why are everyday objects like a door or a chair tier 1?
These are among the words said and pointed at most often in a home, so they rank highest for everyday frequency at this age — that is what sets tier order, not how the words are grouped by theme.
Do I have to finish tier 1 before opening tier 2?
No. Tiers order the topic list by how common the words are; they never lock anything. Any learner can open any topic on any day.
What is the respelling under the IPA for?
IPA is exact but needs training to read. The respelling — dor, win-doh, cher — is there so any adult can say the word correctly on sight.
