Why these words come first

Fruit names are some of the first food words a learner reaches for, because they are handed over, pointed at and eaten every day. That is why banana, apple, mango, orange and grape sit in tier 1 — tiers order the catalog by everyday frequency for the target age, not by theme, and fruit words rank near the top of that list from the very start.

Each card below carries the picture, the English word, its IPA transcription, a plain-English respelling you can read aloud without training, and the meaning in Bengali or Hindi. Tap the round button to hear it in the language you picked above.

Pick one topic per sitting — five words is a full session. Say the respelling, not the IPA, when reading aloud. Play the English clip first and the home-language clip second.

Questions people ask

Why do fruit words appear so early, in tier 1?
A learner sees and eats fruit daily, so banana, apple, mango, orange and grape rank among the highest-frequency words for the age group — tier order follows that frequency, not the fruit theme.
Do I have to finish tier 1 before opening tier 2?
No. Tiers order the topic list by how common the words are; they never lock anything. Any learner can open any topic on any day.
In English, “orange” names both the fruit and a colour — is that true in Bengali and Hindi too?
Not quite the same way. TotWord teaches a separate word for the fruit and the colour in both Bengali and Hindi, while English reuses “orange” for both. That overlap is worth pointing out the first time a learner meets the word.
