Why these words come first

Face, eye and hand are among the very first words any learner points to, which is why body-parts-01 opens tier 1 of the TotWord catalog. The theme keeps going well past tier 1, though — body-parts-04, further down the same series, sits in tier 3, because tiers order every word by how often it comes up at the target age, not by theme. A younger learner touches and names some parts constantly; an older learner only meets others in a science lesson, so the two land in different tiers even inside the very same topic family.

Each card below carries the picture, the English word, its IPA transcription, a plain-English respelling you can read aloud without training, and the meaning in Bengali or Hindi. Tap the round button to hear it in the language you picked above.

Pick one topic per sitting — five words is a full session. Say the respelling, not the IPA, when reading aloud, and point to the real part as you say it. Play the English clip first and the home-language clip second.

Questions people ask

Why is body-parts-01 tier 1 when the body-parts theme also reaches tier 3?
Tiers rank each topic by its own words' everyday frequency, not by theme. Face, eye, nose, mouth and ear are named constantly from the very start of life, so body-parts-01 opens tier 1; later body-parts topics, with rarer words, land in tier 3 instead.
Do I have to finish body-parts-01 before opening body-parts-02?
No. Tiers only order the topic list by how common the words are; they never lock anything. Any learner can open any topic on any day.
Why is foot translated as পায়ের পাতা instead of a single short word?
Bengali পা covers the whole leg, from hip to toes, so TotWord uses the more specific পায়ের পাতা — literally “the flat of the leg” — to point at just the foot, matching English's separate words for foot and leg. Hindi already has two clean words, पैर for foot and टांग for leg, so no extra phrase is needed there.
